Get started with prompts for text-based Generative AI tools.

AI

If you're a content creator looking to generate engaging articles, I’m sure you’ve heard or dabbled with Generative AI tools by now.

But here is the thing about AI…

The information, sentences, or questions that you enter into a Generative AI tool (“prompts”) are a big influence on the quality of outputs you receive. After you enter a prompt, the AI model analyses your input and generates a response based on the patterns it has learned through its training.

It's good to remember that content generated by AI may lack accuracy, mislead, fabricate entirely, or even be offensive. Therefore, it's essential to meticulously review any material incorporating AI-generated content before using or publishing it.

If using Generative AI for a business, ensure that you’re not entering sensitive data and that you are following that company’s guidelines on AI usage.

Tone of voice

Prompting a specific tone of voice in writing involves providing clear guidelines and examples that reflect the desired style and mood. This is beneficial to keep your writing consistent and human-sounding. Some strategies to prompt a certain tone of voice can include:

  1. Provide Examples:

Offer samples of writing that demonstrate the desired tone. These examples can serve as references for AI to understand the tone you're aiming for.

  2. Detailed Instructions:

Clearly outline the characteristics of the tone you want to convey. Describe the mood, language style, and emotional resonance you're seeking.

  3. Analogies and Metaphors:

Use analogies or metaphors to describe the tone you're looking for. Compare it to familiar concepts or situations that convey the desired mood.

  4. Use Adjectives and Adverbs:

Incorporate descriptive words that capture the essence of the tone you want. For example, if you want a playful tone, use adjectives like "lighthearted" or "whimsical."

  5. Provide Context:

Offer context about the target audience, purpose of the content, and any specific cultural or industry norms that influence the tone.

  6. Encourage Creative Interpretation:

Allow AI to infuse their unique voice while adhering to the overall tone guidelines. Encourage creativity and experimentation within the defined parameters.

  7. Feedback and Revision:

Provide constructive feedback on drafts to help AI refine its tone. Encourage revisions that align more closely with the desired voice.

To get the best results when asking questions, consider the following:

  1. Clear and Specific:

Clearly articulate your question or inquiry to provide context and ensure I understand what you're asking. Generic prompts like “Write a story” will produce generic results. What kind of story do you want? What genre? Is it for adults or children? How long should it be? Is it funny or serious? Adding this type of context and being specific, clear, and concise will help generate more useful outputs.

  2. Provide Relevant Details:

Include relevant information related to your question to help me understand the context and provide a more accurate response.

  3. Ask One Question at a Time:

Avoid asking multiple questions within the same query to maintain clarity and focus. If you have multiple inquiries, consider breaking them down into separate questions.

  4. Avoid Ambiguity:

Phrase your question in a way that leaves little room for interpretation or ambiguity. This helps me provide a more precise and relevant answer.

  5. Use Keywords and Phrases:

Incorporate specific keywords or phrases related to your question to guide me in understanding the topic and providing relevant information.

  6. Be Patient and Open-Minded:

Understand that generating responses may take some time, especially for complex or nuanced questions. Be patient and open to the information provided.

  7. Provide Feedback:

If the response doesn't fully address your question or if you need further clarification, feel free to provide feedback or ask follow-up questions.

  8. Presentation:

Generative AI can produce many different types of outputs, including code, stories, reports, summaries, dialogue, business communications, images, and more. Being specific about the type of output you want will produce better results. After describing what you want, try adding “Present this in the form of…” and your preferred output. Or start your prompt with, “Create a [format of output] about / that contains…” etc.

By following these guidelines, you can optimise the quality and relevance of the responses you receive.
